Washington Redskins

Mike Shanahan loves Brandon Weeden

According to Don Banks of SI.com, Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan loves Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden and might be tempted to trade down in the first round to take him.
Shanahan fell in love with Weeden after coaching him at the senior bowl.  One of the most attractive things about him, is that he’s 28 years-old and will be ready to start in the NFL right away because of his maturity.

Is Portis a viable possibility?

Even though he signed a two-year contract, this season’s backup running back, Ricky Williams, retired earlier this month. That leaves the Ravens with inexperienced backs behind Ray Rice.
The two running backs behind Rice, who is a free agent, on the roster are Anthony Allen and Damien Berry. Allen was action in five games this season, totaling three carries for eight yards. All of that action came against the St. Louis Rams way back in Week 3. Berry was a practice squad player.

That’s why I bring up the possibility of former Broncos and Redskins running back Clinton Portis. Portis didn’t play this past season, but would like to play again, according to this report from Steve Wyche of NFL.com.
In Portis’ favor, his legs are fresh after being out of the league for a season and he went to the University of Miami. Former Hurricanes have a way of making their way to the Ravens because of the presence of Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
Portis could be a viable backup to Ri…

‘Skins still lack a QB; more team needs

The Washington Redskins and Mike Shanahan are still looking for that “franchise” player at the quarterback position, as they plan to upgrade from John Beck and Rex Grossman this offseason. With issues also outside of the numbers at the wide receiver position and in the secondary, let’s take a look at the rookie prospects that fit the team needs in Washington heading into the NFL Draft.

Redskins forced to discuss quarterback “game plan”

Just over a week ago a Washington Redskins fan posted an article on HogsHaven.com about his encounter with defensive coordinator Jim Haslett when he ran into him in public.
Supposedly Haslett gave the fan some insight on what the Redskins plan is this offseason when it comes to their quarterback situation. Haslett of course denied everything that he was accused of saying by the fan.
This has ultimately forced Redskins general manager Bruce Allen to come out and give everyone an idea of how the Redskins plan on addressing the quarterback position this offseason.
“We have a game plan on what to do,”said Allen on CSNWashington’s Redskins Nation.  “And obviously our game plan has to have alternate routes on it based on what other clubs do. We feel good about it and how we’re gonna address all the needs on our football team, and [we’re] looking forward to getting after it.”
No one should be surprised that Allen kept things very vague about the Redskins “game plan.”  We won…

Ryan Tannehill: New addition to Redskins QB equation

The Washington Redskins quarterback question will be solved here within the next two months and while fans of the team and league know the cast of characters, a new one has been added and that is Ryan Tannehill, the quarterback from Texas A&M who is entering the 2012 NFL Draft. Most analysts have a consensus of Andrew Luck being the first quarterback selected with Robert Griffin, III being next and that now leaves Ryan Tannehill being the next best signal caller on the board. The rumors are circulating and at this point there is really no way to tell the exact route that Dan Snyder and Mike Shannahan will take when it comes to the quarterback situation. While Rex Grossman and John Beck are still in the mix, it just seems too obvious that the team is going to get a QB either through the draft or through free agency. There is word now that the Cleveland Browns would like to trade up from their number four posistion to go after RGIII and that would leave the Redskins at number 6 lo…

Bold Predictions: Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins ended 2011 regular season like they have the past three seasons before it; not celebrating. The Redskins haven’t been to the playoffs since 2007 and have been watching the postseason from home in 10 of their last 13 seasons. But there were some bright spots in 2011. There was resemblance of the Redskins of old with a reemergence of a running game led by the 105th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Roy Helu. London Fletcher, after 14 long seasons and leading the NFL in tackles, was shafted from the pro bowl again, until they let him in.

Where to start with last year’s Redskins that the die hard fans don’t already know? Wrecks Grossman started the season winning three of his first four starts and throwing six touchdowns to five interceptions. Then, was pulled in week six in favor of John Beck after going 9 of 22 for 143 yards and four picks. Fans called for Beck, and their prayers were answered until everyone found out he wasn’t mo…

Clinton Portis says he had a ‘bad breakup’ with Redskins

Last week came word that Clinton Portis still wanted to play NFL football, and that he had struggled with the idea of playing in 2011 because he was “heartbroken” over the end of his Redskins tenure.
Monday, Portis explained himself further during an interview with John Thompson on ESPN 980, and he took the love metaphor to the next step.

Redskins Training Facility Idea Facing Early Opposition in D.C.

D.C. Commissioner Brian Flahaven is solid on his stance about a  Washington Redskins training facility in the D.C. area.  Short and simple, he’s not on board with it.   His reasons are mostly from an investment point of view.
When I contacted commissioner Flahaven last week about this idea he said, “I’m not a fan of this idea, particularly because the city would be essentially giving prime, Metro-accessible real estate for a private facility that would offer few, if any, benefits to the neighborhood and city.”
Headlines started buzzing last week about D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray’s quiet but active plans to try and get the Washington Redskins to move their training facility to the D.C. area.
This plan, said Flahaven, is not generating a lot of support from the public at all.
“Most residents in the neighborhood are opposed, particularly since we have few details about the plan,” Flahaven explained. “We think the Mayor needs to seek resident …

Bruce Allen: Redskins ‘have a game plan’ at quarterback

If you want to spend 51 seconds not learning anything about what the Redskins plan to do at the quarterback position next season, you could go eat some rice pudding, or draw a picture of clouds with oil pastels, or bang your head into a wall 51 times, or watch this clip from Redskins Nation.

2012 Redskins QB Rumors

It’s funny hearing all of the draft and trade rumors with regards to the Washington Redskins and their needs in order to get them back to those glory days of the past.  From picking up Peyton Manning to trading up to get the Rams 2nd overall pick to draft RGIII.  But then again, it’s that time. Everyone knows that owner Daniel Snyder is not afraid to spend money on his team.  Bring in head coach Mike Shanahan and the two could spend a lot of money this offseason.  According to Howard Eskin, a sports radio personality out of Philadelphia, “Peyton Manning is ‘very likely’ to become a Redskin. They are looking at other quarterbacks, but Eskin believes that is just a smokescreen.”  That statement in itself raises interesting questions.  One that quickly comes to mind would be how does he know?  He’s from Philly for cryin-out-loud.  But seriously, the Redskins are in need of a quarterback.  That we know. ESPN analyst and former Redskin and Bronco Mark Schereth had this to say on ESPN, “T…

Don’t forget the backup QB

For all the off-season chatter that the Bears are just a wide receiver, real offensive line, and/or defensive end away from being a playoff team, we seem to have forgotten something: the Bears would have been in the playoffs if only they had a backup QB who could win just one game. One game! Thankfully, Phil Emery, Mike Tice, and Jeremy Bates have plenty of better-than-Hanie options on the free agency market. That said, getting a starting-grade backup at this most expensive of positions is going to limit the Bears’ options when it comes to affording top-tier talent to fill our other positions of need. So, I put the question to you, WCG faithful: should we spend the coin on a real backup quarterback, or save the cash for someone who will do more than hold a clipboard?

Redskins add Phillip Daniels to their front office

On Friday the Washington Redskins announced the hiring of former defensive end Phillip Daniels as their new director of player development.
The 38 year-old Daniels played 15 seasons in the NFL.  His final six were with the Redskins.  He ended up getting released during training camp last season and was unable to catch on with another team.
“We welcome Phillip back to the Redskins family,” Redskins general manager Bruce Allen said in a press release per the Washington Post. “His 15 years of NFL experience will be a great asset for our football team.”
“I’m really looking forward to helping our players and team win, on and off the field,” said Daniels.
Daniels is a class act whose been one of the few veteran leaders for the Redskins during his time in Washington D.C.

Clinton Portis plotting return in 2012

Following a one (and a half) year hiatus, Clinton Portis is ready to resume his NFL career.
Per NFL.com, Portis, after receiving the green light by private doctors, plans on returning to football in 2012, and a “handful of teams” have already shown interest in the former Broncos and Redskins running back, his agent, Jason Fletcher, said Thursday.
Fletcher will meet with the interested parties during next week’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Portis’ last NFL action came in 2010, when he played just five games before a groin injury ended his season — and eventually his career in Washington.
The former All-Pro back admitted he “was heartbroken” after the Skins cut him loose last year, but has since put those feelings behind him and is now out to prove he’s still got it.
“I’m ready to go back, ready to work things out and I’m open to idea of going out to prove that I can still play,” Portis said. “I just …

RB Portis hopes to play in 2012

Running back Clinton Portis told NFL.com that he has his passion back after being “heartbroken” after the Washington Redskins cut him last season.”I’m ready to go back, ready to work things out and I’m open to idea of going out to prove that I can still play…I’m just ready to go prove to whatever team that’s ready and willing to open the doors to go out and prove it,” Portis said Friday. The 30-year-old played in 13 games in the two seasons before his release due to a severe concussion in 2009 and a torn groin muscle in 2010.The two-time Pro Bowl selection has been cleared by doctors to resume his career.Portis’ agent Jason Fletcher plans to meet with teams at next week’s scouting combine to gauge interest in his client.Portis is 77 yards shy of 10,000 career rushing yards.

Report: Browns will try to draft RG3

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, there’s a really good chance that the Browns will attempt to trade up for the second overall pick in April’s draft, in order to get Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III.
“If the Browns determine at the Combine next week and maybe through one or two more visits that RGIII is their man, I don’t think they would hesitate to give up their No. 4 and their No. 22 to pull off this deal,” said Cabot. “… It’s almost a perfect match. I think at this point it’s very likely that could happen.”
The Browns will of course have to outbid the Washington Redskins for the second pick, since they’ve also been mentioned as team that’s looking to trade up for RGIII.. There’s no question though that the Browns have a lot more ammunition then the Redskins to make the trade happen.
