Report: Ward’s DUI charge dropped

Georgia authorities dropped a drunk driving charge against Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward Wednesday.

As part of an agreement with DeKalb County prosecutors, Ward pleaded guilty to reckless driving stemming from his arrest last July, and also pleaded no contest to a charge of failing to maintain his lane, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

He agreed to serve a year on probation, pay a $2,000 fine and perform 80 hours of community service.

Ward, who turns 36 next month, was pulled over after hitting a curb on an Atlanta highway. He failed a field sobriety test and refused to submit to a blood-alcohol test.

The two-time Super Bowl champion and four-time Pro Bowler was released after posting $1,000 bond.

Ward, who was the MVP of the Steelers’ Super Bowl XL victory, has said he intends to play next season, but it remains unclear whether he will be back for a 15th season in Pittsburgh.

Ward caught 46 balls for 381 yards and two touchdowns last season in a reduced role in the offense.

Steelers Tender Contract To Free Agent Punter Jeremy Kapinos

The Pittsburgh Steelers have started tendering a few of their free agents as punter Jeremy Kapinos reports via his Twitter feed that he has received his one-year tender. He stated in the tweet that he is excited and preparing to be a Steeler for another year.

Kapinos signed back with the Steelers in early November after punter Daniel Sepulveda suffered a meniscus tear in his right knee. Kapinos also had replaced the injured Sepulveda in 2010 because of another knee injury suffered by Sepulveda. Kapinos was back with the Steelers in training camp this past season and was released during the final Read more [...]

Mike Wallace Says He Has To Do What He Has To Do, But Says Both Sides Are Talking

Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free agent Mike Wallace was interviewed by Adam Schein and Jim Miller on SiriusXM NFL Radio and was asked about several topics that included the change of offensive coordinators as well as his pending free agency situation.

Wallace was asked if his mind wonders to thinking about the possibility of leaving the Steelers and signing with another team. Wallace replied, “Well the position that I am in, I’m always going to think about it sometimes because I have never been in this position before. So it’s kind of hard to just not think about anything. So yeah, my mind Read more [...]

First-Round Compensation Would Be Worth Steelers Wide Receiver Mike Wallace

We’re not one to blindly dispute what others say. If there’s a website out there that we routinely disagree with (and there’s plenty), we merely read the post or ignore it all together. It’s not our place to say when someone’s wrong about something because the beauty of one’s opinion rarely requires absolute solution. It’s an opinion and whether you agree with it or not, it remains a state of commentary from one’s perspective.
However we’re making an exception today. The guys at Who Dey Fans are as close to our friends as any Bengals-related website out there. They’re fair-minded, honest and as big of Bengals fans as any of us. Unfortunately we can’t agree with their assessment that Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace wouldn’t be worth first-round compensation.

Steelers fully prepared to handle this offseason & the future

Even with all the hype surrounding the Steelers this offseason; Todd Haley, Ben Roethlisberger, Free Agency, who’s running the team, the Steelers are not in any worse shape than they are in any other year organizationally speaking. Sure they are working their way out of a tricky salary cap situation but it’s not as hopeless as it was made out to be initially. The front office knows exactly what they’re doing with player contracts, the draft, and pretty much everything else that involves running the franchise. For some reason there is this notion that this offseason is so much different than previous years, that the Steelers are somehow potentially in trouble in the future with the salary cap. The Rooney’s and Kevin Colbert have not steered us wrong in the past so we shouldn’t be worried now about how things are going now.  Every year no matter what the cap is, no matter who leaves or comes into the franchise, they always field a competitive team with a solid coaching staff. Ok, I kn…

Why I Think A New Deal Will Be Reached With Mike Wallace Before March 5th

With the 2012 NFL combine getting started on Wednesday, I thought now would be the perfect time to give my gut feeling thoughts on what will happen with Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace.

I have talked extensively about the options the Steelers have in regards to placing a first round tender or using the franchise tag on Wallace, but as I mentioned in the podcast last Friday, the best case solution is to just have him signed to a long term deal before having to use either of those on him.

Using just a first round tender is mighty risky, even though it returns Read more [...]

How Bad Are All Of The Restructured Contracts Hurting The Steelers In 2013?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to finish solving all of their salary cap problems as they march forward to the start of the new 2012 league year and already Steeler Nation is worried about 2013. The worries are centered around all of the contract restructuring that has been done over the last two seasons.

Since the 2011 season ended the Steelers have restructured the contracts of LaMarr Woodley, Lawrence Timmons, Ike Taylor and Willie Colon. These restructures consisted of base salary money being converted to signing bonus and prorated out over the remaining years left on each of the players Read more [...]

Will the Steelers let Mike Wallace go in free agency?

Will the Steelers let Mike Wallace go in free agency?  The Steelers are currently over the salary cap and will not have money to resign Wallace.  The Steelers could use the franchise tag on Wallace, but the Steelers are currently $10 million dollars over the cap; so paying Wallace $9 million dollars in 2012 is out of the question.
The Steelers have plenty of talent if Wallace leaves.  Both Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Brown had breakout years in 2011; so losing Wallace won’t be a huge problem for the Steelers passing game.  The Steelers traded away Santonio Holmes in 2010 and the Steelers had little problem finding his replacement.
If Wallace does hit the free agency market; is he worth top dollar money?  Wallace has great speed, but he isn’t a great all around receiver.  With so many top receivers in the free agent class this year; Wallace could take a back seat to the likes of Stevie Johnson, Vicent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe, DeSean Jackson and Marques Colston in terms of getting top dol…

Mike Wallace Could Leave Pittsburgh?

The Steelers are reportedly willing to let stud receiver Mike Wallace hit the free agent market, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Fantasy Spin:
The Steelers are expected to place a first-round restricted tender on Wallace, and will then see what happens regarding what other teams are willing to pay for him. If Wallace does end up leaving Pittsburgh, then the fantasy stock of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looks to take a hit, while Antonio Browns value would see a significant boost.

Willie Colon restructures deal to save Steelers cap space

Steelers offensive tackle Willie Colon was at the Steelers facility today.  It is being reported via the Pittsburgh Post Gazette that Colon has restructured his contract to save the Steelers $2.85 million in cap space.
Colon was due to make $5.7 million against the cap this year.  He had $4.5 million in base salary.  He has removed $3.8 million from his base salary and turned it into future bonus money.  His cap number this year will be $2.85 million.
The Steelers were reported to be $11 million over the cap as of last week.  This brings them down to $8.15 million left to get under the 2012 salary cap.  They have until March 13th to do so.

Steelers willing to let Mike Wallace test the market

According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers are willing to allow wide receiver Mike Wallace test the market.
If a team makes an offer to Wallace that the Steelers believe is too high, they would then be willing to let him walk and accept a first round pick in return for him, since he’s a restricted free agent.
If all a team has to give up is a first round pick for a player that’s entering the prime of his career, teams like the Ravens and Patriots might jump at the opportunity since they have late round picks.
Right now I believe there’s a good chance that Wallace won’t be playing in Pittsburgh next season.

Steelers Restructure Contract Of Willie Colon

Now we see why Willie Colon was probably headed to the Pittsburgh Steelers facility today and it wasn’t just to meet new offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Ed Bouchette from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports this morning via Twitter that Colon has restructured his contract to help save the Steelers some cap space in 2012. Bouchette reports that $3.8 million of the s $4.5 million base salary that Colon was scheduled to earn in 2012 was turned into signing bonus money and will be prorated out over the remaining 4 years left on the contract.

Colon was scheduled to count $5.7 million against the Read more [...]

Calming Fears Of Being In Same Spot Next Year With Antonio Brown & Emmanuel Sanders

The Mike Wallace situation has yet to play itself out and already many are worried about the situation the Pittsburgh Steelers will run into next year at this time with wide receivers Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders, both of whom are scheduled to be restricted free agents after the 2012 season.

To start off trying to calm those fears we need to look at the list of players, that at the time of this post, are scheduled to be free agents after the 2012 season, both restricted and unrestricted. The scheduled restricted free agents, in addition to both Brown and Sanders, will be Stevenson Sylvester, Read more [...]
