New York Jets: Versatile Courtney Upshaw Fills A Major Need

If this year’s Super Bowl proved anything, it is that the formula to beat the New England Patriots heavily involves a strong pass rush. With the likes of Calvin Pace and Aaron Maybin leading the way, the Jets have a long way to go to reach that level.
There’s no question that the Jets also struggled mightily with covering tight ends this season, especially ones with speed and athleticism. There were a total of five games this past season in which the opposing team’s TE was the leading receiver. To me, that’s a pretty alarming statistic when it is not other teams wide receivers who are hurting you, but their tight ends. It screams that the Jets defense is slow at both linebacker and safety, and that they need to seriously consider taking a Courtney Upshaw in the upcoming draft.
When I watched Courtney Upshaw play this year, I saw a guy who could do just about anything in the scheme of a defense. Upshaw is a stout 6’2, 265 pounds and has experience as both an outside and inside …

2012 NFL draft: Possible selections for the New York Jets

The 2011 New York Jets were full of expectations as Rex Ryan once again proclaimed the Jets would be in the Super Bowl, but the team imploded at the end of the season and failed to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Mark Sanchez was under scrutiny for his decision making and costly interceptions and by the end of the season the team started to turn against him. The Jets are in an interesting situation as the talent remains in New York but uncertainty still circles around the team. There are a few glaring needs at wide receiver and offensive line, but the Jets have already come forward and stated they will cut LB Bart Scott. Reduced to only a part-time player, when he agreed to reduce his 2011 and 2012 base salaries in July (from $4.9 million and $5.6 million to $3.9 million and $4.2 million), in return the Jets fully guaranteed both years. So they will still be paying for his services but lack the leadership he provided for the team. Rex Ryan has one of the most compl…

Ron Jaworski: Jets should go after Colts QB Peyton Manning

(PhatzRadio / ESPN) — ESPN’s Ron Jaworski may no longer be part of the Monday Night Football booth, but he’s far from done dispensing his NFL analysis for the network.
Asked about his outlook for Colts QB Peyton Manning in a recent radio interview, “Jaws” didn’t hold back.
“I think Peyton Manning ends up playing somewhere else,” Jaworski told 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia. “Certainly, when you look at the Colts right now, they’re a team that’s going through their development process with a new coaching staff and new players.
“I think it’s best for Peyton to go and play on a team that can compete for a Super Bowl, a team that might be a quarterback away from elevating that team to Super Bowl status, and I think that would be a win-win situation.”
And who might that would-be Super Bowl team that best fits Manning be?
“The New York Jets,” opined Jaworksi. “I love (Jets QB) Mark Sanchez, and there are 25 other quarterbacks in this league that I would take Pey…

New York Jets: What Is A Successful Off-Season?

The upcoming New York Jets off-season is likely going to disappoint a large portion of the team’s fanbase. Every need isn’t going to be filled. That being said, what do the Jets have to take care of, at a minimum, in the upcoming months for Mike Tannenbaum to do a satisfactory job?
It starts up front on both sides of the football, which means getting Sione Pouha signed to a 2-3 year deal to make sure he can keep anchoring the Jets run defense. On offense, that means bringing in a veteran right tackle to compete with Wayne Hunter, somebody along lines of a Vernon Carey. The offensive line should also be supported with a mid-round pick to develop.
Improving the pass rush is of equal priority. Mario Williams isn’t happening. There are a few decent stopgap players available in free agency like Anthony Spencer and Manny Lawson. If Tannenbaum is thinking big on draft day, it should be at this position. The Jets aren’t going to need to sell the farm to move up to ge…

Peter Tessier: Jets -Flyers Game Day & My Latest 10 Thoughts

Follow me on Twitter if you want, today I just gave away a promo code for Jets tickets so click HERE!

The Jets hose the Flyers for the fourth and final meeting tonight between the two teams. The Jets have a perfect 3-0-0 record on the line against the Flyers while Philly comes in as 0-2-1 against the Jets (thank the NHL for that oddity). The Jets have scored 17 goals in three games on the Fly…

2012 NFL Draft: Will Nick Toon Follow Father’s Footsteps To Jets?

Like father, like son.  Wisconsin wide out Nick Toon—the son of former New York Jets star receiver Al Toon—isn’t allowing his did’s horrible history of concussions stop him from following in his father’s footsteps.
The 2012 NFL Draft features it’s fair share of strong, talented and really reliable receivers.  Nick Toon is one of them.  His numbers won’t blow you away; Wisconsin’s offense operated heavily in the ground game.  He doesn’t possess earth-shattering special speed, either.  But the 6-3, 220-pound wide out does have aforementioned bloodlines.
Bloodline: His father was a Wisconsin Hall of Fame receiver (left as all-time receiving leader) and could have embarked on a Hall of Fame career in the NFL if it weren’t for several setbacks with concussions—which amounted to nine according to Al—after being selected 10th overall in the 1985 NFL Draft and spending eight seasons with the Jets.
Pros/Cons: Equipped with a hot pair of hands, …

Sizing up Jets Salary Cap

Let me start by first stating how awful I am at math. No seriously. Just plain awful. I use my fingers to add up tips for big checks at restaurants. But I will NOT use my cellphone’s tip calculator. You got to draw the line somewhere. In high school, math IV was nearly the downfall of what was lined up to be a most glorious post-graduation bender. Booze, babes and beaches all were left waiting in limbo while Ms. Keavey’s hellish red pen left marks all over my loose leaf assignments. Only my marked propensity for chitter chatter and a knack…

Peyton Manning to the Jets?

Thanks, Jaws. I guess the best way for everyone to forget you were booted off the Monday Night Football crew is to go on local radio and be the “NFL insider” correspondent. Ron Jaworski went on the 97.5 in Philly and talked with Mike Missanelli. Jaworski, like many of us, believe Peyton won’y be back in a Colts uniform.Instead of the Colts, he thinks the Jets would be a great fit. Where do I begin? Can we agree that if Peyton gets to call his shot, he wants to be in an opportunity to get deep in the playoffs immediately? OK. Good. Will the Jets be that team? No.The thing most in the forefront for the Jets right now is to handle the internal drama. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes was benched in the final game, after jawing with teammates about his role. The Jets lost that game, 19-17, and didn’t make the playoffs.Drama aside, are the Jets a fit for Manning? Do they have the personnel to win now? I would have to say it is sketchy. The Jets don’t have a particularly s…

Burning question: should the New York Jets draft a quarterback?

Despite what Rex Ryan thinks, the New York Jets are not the kings of the Big Apple. That role is currently taken by the New York Football Giants. The Jets have a lot to do this off season before they can be considered true contenders in the AFC again.
The number one talked about name you might hear associated to the Jets this offseason is Peyton Manning. While the Jets are still a long shot to land Manning, the more interesting storyline will be whether or not they make a full out pursuit for his services.
While the Jets are a name attached to Peyton, as of right now that is pure speculation. Should the Jets make their intentions for Manning public it could have a large implications on the future of Mark Sanchez. While most don’t believe Sanchez is the right guy, Rex Ryan claims he will stick by his guy.
The of season is still very fresh and I’m sure this storyline will continue to linger. However the odds are still that Mark Sanchez will be the opening day starter. With that bei…

Report: Jets won’t tag Sione Pouha

According to Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger, the New York Jets won’t place the franchise tag on nose tackle Sione Pouha.  He’s arguably their most crucial free agent, and now they’ll be forced to let him walk.
The Jets don’t have enough cap room to sign Pouha and he’ll likely be able to get a multi year deal somewhere else.

New York Jets and Other NFL Logos Reimagined by Artist Wes Kull on Gridiron-League.com

Next season, the NFL will have a major change on the field for the first time in years, although it may seem pretty minor from afar.
Starting with the new league year in March, all NFL uniforms will be designed and produced by Nike after a long-standing contract with Reebok expired.
The results will be most felt by the players, in their sleeker, lighter, more ergonomically designed jerseys. But it also means that there could be some alterations in a few teams’ looks. We’ll find out soon enough.
Artist Wes Kull decided to go one step further, and he’s started a project where he’s reimagining the team logos for all 32 teams in the league, in his own unique style.
Check out the site over at Gridiron-League.com, where Kull has created 32 logos, one for each team, in what he calls a work-in-progress of alternative designs of each NFL team logo.
From the site’s About page:
Gridiron League is a collection of idealized NFL insignias that pay tribute to each tea…

Could Dustin Keller’s Days in a New York Jets Uniform Be Numbered?

I try to be an optimistic New York Jets fan. Most of the time, I focus on the positives even when they seem far and few between.
Under head coach Rex Ryan, the Jets have been relatively successful, compared to many of the other teams in the league. They haven’t reached their ultimate goal yet, which of course is a Super Bowl championship.
I’m pretty confident that Ryan will get there one day. He’s a terrific football coach and the Jets have a pretty good core to build upon going forward.
I really liked the hiring of former Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano as the new Jets offensive coordinator. He and new offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo should give the Jets some added toughness on offense.
I’m a big believer in smash mouth football, controlling the clock with the running game and simply dominating at the line of scrimmage and at the point of attack.
The Jets offensive line had a down year by their standards in 2011, especially in pass protection, b…

Ellen DeGeneres tries to entrap Kate Upton into admitting she is dating Mark Sanchez on “Ellen” (Video)

Kate Upton, the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover girl, made an appearance on “Ellen” recently, and host Ellen DeGeneres wasted no time asking Upton about the rumors that she is dating New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.
Upton did a good job avoiding a direct answer, although when Ellen asked how long they have been dating, Upton couldn’t look Ellen in the eye when she says “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Viewers will just have to make up their own minds.

New York Jets Off-Season Discussion- Featuring NY Jets 101

Throughout the New York Jets off-season TOJ will be discussing their ongoing free agency and draft situation with various other writers. Today we talked with Donald Lappe from Jets 101 on a number of different topics -
NYJ101 – There is a lot of different things floating around about the Jets’ salary cap issues. Putting the salary cap craziness aside, what should be their first order of business when free agency opens?
TOJ – The Jets need to take care of their own first, which means bringing back Sione Pouha. This team has made a bad habit of letting leaders…and productive leaders at that walk away from the team. They need him back both as an anchor to their run defense in the 3-4 and one of the few people worthy of a “C” on his chest in the locker room.
NYJ101 – The guaranteed salary jump for Wayne Hunter basically means he’ll be on the roster this season. Are the Jets going to ride with him as their starter on the right side? Do y…
