Redskins vs. Ravens: Ricky Williams, Carson Palmer & 5 Players Either Could Sign

The Washington Redskins take on the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night in a battle of two teams with more to prove. These are two teams that can still reach deep into free agency and beyond to answer some looming holes. These are the athletes that will cure what ails them.

Every team is putting their final touches on their respective starting squads. The second to last preseason week is about getting some last touches for the starters before the rookies and prospects fight for their life in the final week.

That means things are pretty well set, but it doesn’t mean things are final. The next few blokes would prove worthy judging by their past production.

If ever there ever were some safe bets, these would be them.

Ricky Williams: The Baltimore Ravens took a stab at Dolphins castoff, Ricky Williams last week. He is the impetus of this list.

The power back still has a tremendous amount of yards left in his legs. A team that runs as much as the Ravens demands depth, and Williams is a perfect fit.

Carson Palmer: I understand that Palmer is under lock and key at the moment. I imagine that he is in some cell that Mike Brown keeps, only letting him out for an hour a day.

In actuality, we may see something ugly right before week one. Palmer could show up, leaving the Bengals to pick up his tab. It may make Brown cringe, but trading him is the right thing to do.

The Redskins would be the best fit as they continue to feature a QB battle between mediocre and mundane.

Terrell Owens: The Redskins don’t seem to have a need a receiver, neither do the Ravens since acquiring Lee Evans.

Well, Owens is not ready for prime time anyway. He is still working on coming back to full health. By that time, there will surely be a drop off or injury on either one of these teams.

The Eagles will get a boost when Steve Smith comes back healthy in a couple months. Both of these teams can use an infusion from a star receiver that has not played his last game. The Ravens could still use one more vertical threat to make Flacco shine.

TJ Houshmandzadeh: This is another player that will come far cheaper, and with less baggage than Owens. Housh has been worked out recently by the Patriots and Colts.

If the Ravens think they need a boost alongside Evans, he would be their man.

Lofa Tatupu: Both the Ravens and Redskins are working out the linebacker kinks. If they want depth, or are hurt with an untimely injury. There is nobody better than Tatupu who will surely find playing time before the season starts in a couple of weeks.

These are gambles, but not ones that would hurt teams like the Ravens or Redskins. Baltimore is a well-oliled machine that can afford to take a stab if the money is right.

For the Redskins, well, things can’t get much worse.
